Project Snapshot

STED Interiors completed ‘The Greenhouse’ over a 5-month period, and completed every aspect of the new office space interior fit out, including Suspended Ceilings, Office Partitions, Glazed Partitions, Painting & Decorating, Plastering, Carpets and Flooring, Showers & Bathrooms, Kitchens, Windows and Carpentry

The Challenge

We worked alongside SWH (South West Highways) & PCC (Plymouth City Council) to transform a run-down, open-plan office space into a state-of-the-art modern space. They wanted the area to include separate offices, to be used for meetings and private conversations, whilst still retaining the open plan area for the large viewing screens. The building had a domed ceiling, so we needed to overcome the challenge of how to hang our Suspended Ceilings and fix our Partitions. In addition to this, having a large ceiling void meant that there could be a problem with controlling the room temperature, and also with the noise from the rain water hitting the building’s tin roof. The room was very cold, as the existing ‘tin’ perimeter walls had no form of insulation to help keep the warmth in. The office is manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so a fully-functioning kitchen and shower room was required, both upstairs and downstairs – as the existing kitchens were old and tired. The carpets throughout the building were old and worn, and had been there since the building was built, back in the late 80’s.

The Solution

Our solution was to firstly secure a sub-grid to the building’s tin roof, so we could securely fix our Suspended Ceiling & Partitions to it, therefore giving everything good, strong and secure support and strength. As the building was cold, we lined the perimeter walls with an independent wall-lining, using metal stud work and insulated plasterboard, with insulation behind. We also laid insulation above the Suspended Ceiling, which helped keep the warmth in and helped to absorb some of the rainfall noise hitting the tin roof.

A fully functioning shower room was created, along with 6 office spaces, and a fully glazed (with controlled blinds) private meeting room. We worked alongside the Mechanical and Engineering team, who installed the air conditioning units and electrical works. New doors were fitted, and Carpentry undertaken throughout. A separate toilet was installed, along with two new kitchens – one upstairs and another downstairs. New carpets were laid throughout the whole building. We were also asked to install the windows, which we completed with a local sub-contractor.

The Result

The result is a stunning and elegant space, which has amazed everyone who visits and remembers how the old Greenhouse building looked. Everything was finished to perfection. The rooms now feel warm and airy, and the noise levels are low. It was a challenge to hit the proposed deadline, but we achieved way above our clients’ expectations. From their original design, to our finished product, they were totally blown away.
